In 2023, The Big Read is tackling five classic titles:
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry (January-March)
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith (April-May)
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (June-September)
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (October, for Halloween!)
East of Eden by John Steinbeck (November-December)
Before each selection, I’ll publish a few reasons why you should read that book, as well as a day-by-day reading schedule.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
1985 | 858 Pages
Without a doubt the greatest Western novel of all-time, which is a quintessentially American genre. This one had crossover literary appeal as well, winning the Pulitzer Prize (along with a slew of others). The characters are unforgettable and the story of this cattle drive from Texas to Montana is likely to bring a tear to your eye — as it did mine.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
1943 | 509 Pages
The ultimate coming-of-age tale about a young girl’s teenaged years in hardscrabble Brooklyn. Young Francie comes to discover the harsh realities of life as an adult while also maintaining plenty of hope and optimism for the future. Everyone can glean some wisdom from her story.
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
1844 | 1,243 Pages
One of the great stories to ever be put on paper. It’s often called a revenge story, and although it is certainly that, it’s also much more. Edmond Dantes is guaranteed to stay with you in a longer, more intense way than just about any character in literature.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
1959 | 208 Pages
I love spooky reads and Jackson’s most famous book is one of the genre’s cornerstones. It’s a perfect example of creating psychological fear in the reader rather than graphic or body horror. If you’re not into spooky reads, it’s a good month to skip.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
1952 | 600 Pages
John Steinbeck’s books have captured the essence of the American story better than just about any writer in our nation’s history. East of Eden is his masterpiece. There aren’t many books I’d call required reading for American citizens, but this is one.
Gathering my reading materials for the year! Do you have any recommendations as far as a translation for the Count of Monte Cristo?
Great list! I am excited! Jeremy, are we still going to read "Endurance" in Nov-Dec of this year?
