Christmas is quickly approaching, so I wanted to share a couple things with you: 1) some thoughts on the brilliance of Lonesome Dove and 2) a gift idea for the bookish people in your life.
I read Lonesome Dove (actually listened to it) the first time you recommended it in your "Read More Books" newsletter. I can honestly say it's the first book that I have read where I didn't want it to end. Gus, Captain Call, Pea-Eye and others become your friends and companions. I highly recommend the audio book the narrator does the different voices, and it makes it so easy to follow what is going on. I'm looking forward to actually reading it this time!
I remember I was at work in 1986, my first kid born, and this friend comes walking across the yard and hands me this big, huge, paperback novel and says, "when you start reading this, you won't be able to stop." He was right. He told me it was a Western, "but it's unlike any Western you've ever read." I fell in love with it, and when my son asked me what I want for Christmas, it was right after reading this post. I told him I wanted it in Hardcover. It looks like it's going to be a very Merry Christmas!
Excited to read this book, it’s been on my Read List for years now and have never gotten around to it. Having it part of the Big Read will force me to go buy it and read along. Looking forward to it!
I bought myself an early Christmas present by ordering a soft cover of this book and subscribing to this group read. I am very much looking forward to sharing this reading experience with everyone. I would have prefered a hard cover since it is a brick of a book but none were available for me to buy here (Canada). I am on holidays now from work and all of the Christmas hubbub is over in our house so I may just get started a little early....I will skip the Preface as recommended....See you in the New Year!
Nope! They're all the exact same text. Whatever you end up with, though, don't read the preface. For some reason, McMurtry gives away some important plot points.

Awesome! I should listen to it this time around... I haven't done that yet.
I wanted to listen but all the reviews of the version on audible re scathing toward the narrator. Guess I will be reading the paperback.
Loved the audiobook. It's read by.Lee Horsley who played the lead role in the TV series, "Matt Houston" in the 80's.
I just ordered my copy (used). I am excited to step into it's world.
I'm excited too!
I'm reading this now and it's amazing--joined The Big Read mostly to hear other people rave about it more lol
So glad to have you aboard Kyle!

You won't be disappointed!
Can’t wait! I’m very excited to begin this journey with the group beginning early next year!
Glad to have you, Jay!
Well, if you have an affiliate link for amazon, I would like to buy the kindle version. ;-) I often buy stuff there.
Sure thing: https://amzn.to/3i3qjYd

Woohoo!
Does it matter which edition we purchase?
